Download and run the free tool here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Once you download it, run it and have it scan your computer. It will search for spyware and malware and try to clean up your machine. After it removes the unwanted stuff, reboot and run it one more time.

Anything cheap. You are going to have to replace it in three years anyway. Don't over spend. For a decent PC I would spend under $600. For a laptop I would spend under $900. The most important item to look at is RAM. Try to get 4GB or more. If you don't, you will have performance problems. If it comes with 3GB, that is OK, but not ideal. As far as brand names, I like HP, Acer and Dell. Look in the Sunday paper for deals and then shop that around as a comparison.
Should I pay for anti-virus? (updated 10/2010)
No! There are great free options available these days. I like the new Microsoft Security Essentials. Just download it and install it and you are good to go. Other options include Avast and AVG.
What is a good Internet filter for my home computer? (updated 10/2010)
K9 Web Protection is what I use. It is free and easy to install. It does a pretty good job of protecting you from the garbage on the Internet.
